Process

The Surveyor-General will draft and maintain a set of policies for the collection, collation and dissemination of spatial information within NSW Government, which aligns with the objectives outlined in the Surveying and Spatial Information Act 2002.

These all-of-government spatial information policies must be endorsed by the NSW Data Leadership Group (NDLG) prior to being issued via a DCS Circular, which is empowered by the NSW Administrative Requirements Framework. This ensures the policies:

  • Meet the needs of all government users.
  • Confirms best practice and compliance with international and national spatial standards and guidelines.
  • Integrates the spatial information policies with other NSW directions relating to ICT disciplines, such as AI, cyber, privacy and data management.

Spatial information policy documents developed for the NSW Spatial Digital Twin (NSW SDT) are the first to be formalised using this process. These documents, known as the NSW SDT Policy Framework (the Policy Framework), provide key information on how spatial data should be integrated into the NSW SDT. They also summarise best practice guidance to ensure that data custodians know what is required of them when interacting within this environment.
